District Clerk Jackson's Staff Showers Blue Santa with Gifts
Blue Santa landed at the Harris County Courthouse this immediate past Christmas season and went away with more than 100 gifts and donated toys from District Clerk Loren Jackson and his office staff.
Freddie Joe Pyland, probably the leading supporter and administrator of the HPD Blue Santa program, said it was one of the most highly successful programs of its kind in 25 years of existence.
"They loaded up our van so we couldn't squeeze in another toy," Pyland said after the load-up. "It was a great assortment, too, and made many, many of Blue Santa's kids very happy.
"We would like to do it again (with Jackson's staff). They are very, very friendly people. Next year is going to be even better."
Pyland was very encouraged by the attitude of Jackson, the first-term district clerk, "and his whole office." Blue Santa himself (Officer David Mireles) made a special appearance for the shower of toys at Jackson's Blue Santa office party on Dec. 17.
"I am thrilled to participate in such a worthy cause this holiday season," Jackson said at the time of the event. "The generosity of our employees in the District Clerk's Office will help many Harris County children during these tough economic times."
Jackson took office more than a year ago, succeeding Theresa Chang, appointed to succeed Charles Bacarisse, who resigned the district clerk's office with time remaining on his term. Jackson, a Democrat, must run for reelection to a full four-year term this year.
As soon as he began his tenure, Jackson made it a practice to have his office's Special Events Committee organize fundraisers throughout the year and determine a beneficiary during Christmas season.
This year, Margaret Wolfe, Jackson's criminal bureau director and wife of HPOU board member Terry Wolfe, suggested Blue Santa.
"They were asking different people who would be a good recipient for the donations," Margaret Wolfe said with a big smile, "and 'someone' brought up Blue Santa. We ran it by the Special Events Committee and they were very excited."
Wolfe said the committee chaired by Jason Cantu, Technical Services supervisor for Jackson, bought more than $2,000 worth of gifts. At the holiday open house held in Jackson's conference room at 201 Caroline, the district clerk's employees brought in more than 100 additional gifts.
"We were so happy to be involved," Wolfe said. "What joy it brings to those kids in the neighborhoods."
"This was a great event," Pyland said. "They didn't know what to expect from us or us from them. But we found out how good things can come together for Blue Santa during the Christmas season."
