Loren Jackson Welcomes Mayor White to Jury Service
Harris County Citizens who reported for jury service this morning saw a familiar face. Loren Jackson, District Clerk, welcomed Mayor Bill White, who took a seat among fellow prospective jurors on the front row in the jury assembly room.
Jackson personally thanks prospective jurors each day for their service and invited Mayor White to speak during his welcome remarks. The mayor commended his fellow constituents for responding to their jury summonses. "It's good to see so many Houstonians out doing the public service of jury duty," White said. "Part of being an American citizen is doing a job. Sometimes our job requires us to vote; sometimes our job is to respond to a jury summons."
Of the 3,000 individuals summoned to jury service this morning, 639 responded. "These numbers reflect the importance of attending jury service," Jackson said. "Mayor White is setting an excellent example for Harris County. When people choose not to participate, it makes it increasingly difficult to provide as diverse of a jury pool as possible for each case and to have juries that consist of 'peers.'"
Jackson daily reminds prospective jurors that service can be exciting and rewarding. Encouraging the public to attend jury service is just one of his initiatives as the new District Clerk. He is working to make the process more pleasant by encouraging the county to provide wireless internet in the jury assembly room. This tool would allow citizens an opportunity to stay connected and to continue earning a paycheck while attending jury service.
In addition to encouraging voluntary jury service, Jackson has taken strides to bring the Harris County District Clerk's Office into the digital era. Jurors can already manage their summonses online, and the office will soon release technological features that will allow attorneys, government agencies and the general public to request and file documents online, track case settings and view more detailed case information, saving the time and energy associated with traveling to the downtown office.
