Harris County District Clerk Sheds Light on His Duties

Loren Jackson, Harris County District Clerk, spoke at the Tomball Rotary Club meeting on June 3 to inform club members about District Clerk's Office technology that will allow the public to access information from home or the office, saving trips downtown. "We want to help the public avoid standing in line by going online," Jackson said.

Automated docketing for civil, family and criminal trials will send attorneys weekly reminder e-mails letting them know of each scheduled hearing. Public criminal data and a docket search for civil and criminal data are just a few new features that will be available this summer.

Jackson also spoke about historic documents. Among the many historic cases on file at the District Clerk's Office are details of a property dispute between Republic of Texas presidents Sam Houston and Mirabeau B. Lamar, a former slave's fight to regain her freedom in 1847, and a lawsuit involving the construction of Hermann Hospital, which is considered the start of the Texas Medical Center.

A collection of these and other historic documents dating from 1837-1925 is available for public viewing in the District Clerk's Historic Document Reading room in Room 200 of the Harris County Civil Courthouse at 201 Caroline.
