Jackson was recognized for using novel and innovative technology to make significant changes to the District Clerk's Office resulting in taxpayer savings and delivering a bevy of online services and features granting greater access to court records and documents to the legal community and the general public.
"We selected Loren because his work as district clerk has enhanced our
practices so that we may better represent our clients through record
retrieval and other means," said JoAnn Musick, President of the HCCLA. "In short, Loren Jackson makes our jobs easier because
we now have access to the information that we need to properly defend our clients."
The Torch of Liberty Award recognizes outstanding contributions helping to strengthen the effectiveness of criminal lawyers in furthering justice, or to promote justice and fairness within the system. The award is generally presented to non-lawyers, such as writers or senators, although technically, as in Jackson's case, the award can be presented to a lawyer, but not a lawyer who primarily practices criminal defense.
"I receive this award with honor and humility," said Jackson, a former litigation attorney and graduate of South Texas College of Law. "I believe the members of HCCLA would agree with me when I say that furthering justice is the reason we do what we do. In essence, it is part of my job description as a public servant. To be recognized for serving our community is truly a great honor."
When Jackson was elected, he vowed to improve efficiency, services and reduce operating costs. To date, he has done just that, and more, and his efforts have not gone unnoticed. Jackson was noted as one of the Impact Players of the Year 2009 by Texas Lawyer magazine, and recognized by the Texas Bar Journal (Dec. 2009) for advocating and promoting e-Filing among the legal community and setting the record of 667 for most e-Filings in one day. The current e-Filing record is 1004, and still held by the District Clerk's Office.
